VolcaMin works as a powerful fertiliser battery, charging when free nutrients are available, holding them from leaching, and releasing them to plant demand as needed. VolcaMin is not affected by temperature, reducing nutrient leaching in hot tropical conditions and holding nutrients for plant use.

VolcaMin also acts as an excellent capillary distributor of water due to its highly porous properties. It assists in infiltration, holds water higher in the pot, and distributes water and nutrients evenly, which is especially important under drip irrigation systems. It is commonly used in leading wetting agents.

Using VolcaMin will absorb excess ammonium and other cations in mixes, preventing root burn during hot conditions. VolcaMin is slightly alkaline and a source of available calcium, which helps buffer pH levels when used with fertilisers, reducing the need for lime applications.

VolcaMin carries a negative ionic charge that naturally attracts positively charged cations like ammonium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Its open crystalline structure provides numerous storage sites for these ions, which are held through a loose chemical bond, making them available to plants. VolcaMin has an exceptionally high cation exchange capacity, improving a mix's ability to hold and release nutrients. As cations are water-soluble, they escape mixes through leaching, but VolcaMin prevents this, making it the perfect planting partner.

It helps water penetrate sandy, non-wettable soils and evenly distributes water around drippers and soak lines. VolcaMin should be used in planting holes, mixed with the top 10-15cm of soil, or incorporated into a mulch.
