If you're time-poor, your soil is in bad shape or need a 7-day green-up tip - you've come to the right place! If your lawn is looking worn or waterlogging has been an issue and it’s your turn to host Christmas lunch, Queensland’s Plant Doctor has the tips to ensure green grass fast before Santa and the relatives arrive.
Whether you are hoping to enjoy an afternoon of backyard cricket, have an alfresco Christmas lunch or impress visiting family, healthy lawns and gardens is key.
While to-do lists are generally long this time of year, these few simple tips will provide a quick green up and health boost without being too time consuming.
Consider your soil health
Lawns and gardens, and more accurately, the soil beneath them is alive and growing and need feeding and nourishment. The recent rain has provided a temporary growth boost, but there’s a few additional steps you can take to maximise this.
If your lawn still hasn’t dried out, consider trimming back foliage of trees and shrubs to allow sun to reach as much lawn as possible and if there’s any signs of fungal diseases, use the appropriate fungicides.
Use a fertiliser high in iron and nitrogen
A fertiliser high in iron and nitrogen is the perfect way to achieve a quick result for those who have let their lawn go. If you need to impress visitors, apply a liquid fertiliser high in iron and nitrogen at least seven days before Christmas to get that last minute green. Our MaxGreen is ideal!
If you’ve been affected by the recent dry period, a soil conditioner or wetter will help prevent this in the future and it’s best to water in the early morning to help avoid the risk of fungal infections.
Lawn tips and solutions for the time-poor
For those who are time-poor, an application of slow-release mineral fertiliser is an ideal solution. Selecting a slow-release fertiliser will provide your lawns and gardens with an initial charge and then deliver sustained nutrition for up to three months.
For those who are extremely time-poor or leave lawn and garden care to the last minute, an iron-based fertiliser is your best chance of a fast green up without the growth, though the results will vary depending on the lawn and conditions. If bare patches are your problem, you need a kelp-based fertiliser or something that is rich in bio-stimulants and humic acid, as this will help stimulate growth.
What to do if clay soil is an issue
For lawns where waterlogging has been a major issue, it could be the result of the soil having a high clay content. Clay-based soils are great for holding water, so this can become a problem when there’s been a lot of rain, continuous improvement and using a clay busting product, such as gypsum, is recommended, our Micronised Gypsum is great!
Helping a waterlogged lawn isn’t just about the activities you do following a major rain event, it’s also about conditioning your lawn outside of the wet season. Throughout the year continue to regularly treat your soil with organic-based fertilisers and soil conditioners to improve the soil profile and encourage beneficial microbes.
During the spring or summer, consider aerating the lawn and top-dressing with an organic material as both will help improve the soil health. This will also help create less compacted soil, which enables better drainage and flow and allows your lawn to recover faster.
For those who intend to invest in lawn and garden care in the new year, need to ensure they select products that will help improve the soil, feed the microbes and deliver essential nutrients for growth. When purchasing any liquids, always look for products containing humic or fulvic acid or that have natural chelating properties.
These will work more efficiently and provide a quicker nutrient uptake by the plants and lawns while also resulting in less wastage or runoff. Using the right products will also help your lawns and gardens build drought tolerance, disease resistance and improve their resilience.
